We love our yacht but one thing it certainly doesn’t have is a bath so imagine our surprise when we rocked up to Carrickfergus Marina to discover it had a lovely bathtub!
Carrickfergus is situated on the northern shore of Belfast Lough, in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. One of the oldest towns in Ireland, Carrickfergus, or Carrick as it is often simply referred to as, is probably best known for its castle.
Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle dating back to 1177. For around 800 years it played a prominent role in many military operations. Today, however, it is one of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland and is open to the public.
The town itself is within easy walking distance of the marina. You’ll find a small shopping centre and a main high street with a few independent shops and some better known names such as Superdrug, Home Bargains, Poundstretchers, and New Look. Behind the marina is a cinema complex, McDonalds, and Sainsbury’s whilst Tesco’s and Iceland can be found further up in the town.
2 for 1!
Carrickfergus Marina is an award winning marina (5 Gold Anchor Award and European Blue Flag) which is home to around 300 berths. Protected from the Lough by two breakwaters, the marina is accessible at all states of tide however E-Oceanic does advise those with a deeper draught to avoid low water or swellier conditions due to the possibility of silt build up at the entrance.
The price per night was £3.50 per metre (September 2023) but interestingly they offer a 2 for 1 deal! This offer is only available once per stay with a minimum 1 week between stays and you must book the second night when you pay on arrival on day one.
The BEST bath EVER!
Carrickfergus Marina is the first marina we’ve stayed at that had a bath, and oh my was it a good one! As cruisers sometimes even having enough hot water for a shower onboard can be tricky, so having the chance to enjoy a deep, long soak was too good an opportunity to miss. First up though was a trip to the local supermarket for a bottle of bubble bath as this is not something we tend to have onboard!
And as mentioned this bath was soooo good! Unbelievably comfy, unlimited hot water and super deep…plus it had little mini cleats on the side 💙
So if you’re cruising this stretch of coastline then we’d highly recommend Carrickfergus Marina. The staff are very welcoming, the facilities excellent and they also provide a personal laundry service – £6.50 for a 7kg wash, dry & fold up. Combine this with the 2 for 1 deal and bath time experience and it’s easy to see why this won the 5 Gold Anchor Award!
